Joe Zook began his career in music as a musician in -- playing guitar in while he was in Elementary school and Junior High. A 16 year old employee at Robb's Music in Boulder, Joe worked for store credit and amassed as much gear as his hourly toil could afford him, and also learned to use the latest recording gear. He moved to at age 19, where he began playing guitar for the band House in Orbit.

The group toured for a time, but Joe's heart was in recording; after attending some studio classes and landing an internship at a local studio, he began plying his craft. On the reccomendation of several New York and Los Angeles recording studios Joe had applied to, he on a degree from the acclaimed University of Miami, where he studied music theory, jazz, music business, and digital audio. He was also a founding member of 'Cane Records, and producer of two records for them.
After graduating, Joe felt the need to relocate once again. In 1996 he made his way to , where he got a gig as a runner at well-regarded Conway Studios. Six months later, he began working as a second engineer at the legendary studio Sunset Sound and Sound Factory. It was there that he assisted Tchad Blake and Mitchell Froom on , mixed records for Reel Big Fish and The Exies and engineered for David Kahne, among other producers.
After four years at Sunset, he met iconoclastic producer . The two struck up a professional relationship that took Joe through , primarily as ProTools engineer-though he shared engineering and recording duties on JJP productions.

At the end of his stint in Puig's studio, Joe returned to free-lancing. Since then he has mixed over 20 records and recorded and/or mixed dozens more including Modest Mouse, Mika, Liz Phair, Tricky, Brooke Fraser, Gavin DeGraw, The Plebz, Jim Boggia, Pink, Lindsay Lohan, Marc Broussard, Remy Zero, and Julian Coryell, to name a few.
